Why are people so worried about ebola? It’s only in Ohio and Texas and who cares about them anyway. Okay, if you have family there, you might care, a little. But still, I would be worried if I lived in the northern part or middle of Africa.
People tend to just group Africa together, while in reality, Africa is a big continent with many countries, not just one big country. People also tend to think that if something is in one part of Africa, then it’s in all of Africa, but really that’s not the case. It’s only in a very small part of Africa.
Still, people are very worried. I only know one person who knows a person who has ebola. If you think I’m trying to tell you that this is not an issue, that is not my purpose. My purpose is to calm your nerves and tell you that they are being very careful. As you fly back from Africa, they require you to fly through one of the five major airports and go through a very meticulous and careful screening.
Ebola is under control in America, but not in Liberia, Sierra Leone, or Guiana. The total number of cases in these countries is about 8,400, but the total number of deaths is about half that. If you think about the New Orleans yellow fever epidemic of 1853, this is barely anything. In 1853, about 7, 850 people died, about 10% of the city, This all happened in ONE city, which quite significant, thinking how the number of deaths for Ebola is spread across three countries.
In my seventh grade class, the big joke when someone is absent is that they have Ebola. Even though Ebola is not nearly as significant as you may have thought before reading this article, it is still a serious problem. The one big difference between now and 1853 other than the different diseases is that that epidemic is over and this one isn’t. Remember to hope for the best and hopefully this disease will end soon, but you never know. Someday this will only be another big epidemic in history without any feeling attached to it. It will just be a date and statics.
